Caspian oil reserves are estimated to be as high those of Saudi Arabia. Not trivial. They are newly discovered and lie in Kazakhstan. The whole problem is getting it out of it's landlocked geography. Iran and Turkey want royalties in transporting it through their countries. Bored? Don't be. It is the key to an alliance with Russia. The Russians already have built a pipeline for transport...

Oh why bother.

BTW I hear the former Russian "stans" maybe used as staging areas for the USAF. Naaaaaaaaah that's impossible.

4. The emotional and political impact of the attack and the terrorist threat is clearly far and away the dominant prism through which this event is being viewed.

I agree with you about the US, but not about the Russians and perhaps other governments in the area. My guess is they are looking closely at the downsides of having US forces on the ground in their countries and the likelihood that once there, they would stay.
