Unfortunately, I don't know enough of the details. I was a broke poolplayer/horseplayer in those days and didn't spend too much time thinking about the implications of that kind of stuff. :-)

As a general rule, I don't have too much of a problem with short term financing to get an otherwise sound business through circumstances beyond its control.

But I think there's a very grey area where you start subsidizing foolishness - like in our existing financial system and its direct and indirect bailouts. Eventually it becomes abusive or the excesses so large that you can't help but bail them because everything is on the line. That's a bad idea.
