As I admitted in a subsequent post, I would like to know how large a percentage of the Saudi people feel that way.

I have certainly seen enough xenophobic and even murderous posts on SI that I would not wish to offer any encouragement to. Here in the United States we need to do whatever we can to make sure that no one from any middle eastern country is persecuted. In the city where I live, we have an important community of Lebanese, for example, and I am afraid of their being harrassed. A student from Lebanon was badly roughed up on a college campus a week ago.

But apparently among some Saudis there is a good deal of talk of Americans as "Crusaders" (i.e. invading Christians).

Edmond, don't you find it surprising that most of the hijackers were Saudis? I certainly did. I was aware that there was some endemic discontent in Saudi Arabia about Western connections and influence, but I didn't imagine that it could ever show itself in suicide hijackings and bombings in the United States.

In one exchange on another thread some time back, I made some people angry by asking one person if he had ever visited a gold mine and knew how gold mines worked. I might ask you, have you ever walked into a mosque during prayers and been greeted with muttering and stares of intense hatred? That was 40 years ago, in what was then southern Yugoslavia, but it was a quick lesson for me about the intensity of feelings of some Muslims about some Christians.

And you are VERY VERY mistaken. What part of official Saudi religious Wahhabi credo of the Saudis intolerance, violence and destruction are you not counting on your fingers and toes?

"The Saudis seem to hate the United States for "polluting" sacred soil with its presence in their country,"

Yes _ they don't mind us defending their oil fields with our lives and money, they mind selling the oil to us after they effectively stole it from the western companies who found it and produced it and keep it flowing for them, but we defile our country by our presence in their country.

It is truly ridiculous when you think about it. If it weren't for the west these guys would be riding camels in the dessert trying to eke out a living. They are the most ungrateful country on earth.
