"I don't know about you or anyone else, but I for one am not going to avoid traveling or shopping. I am surprised that a sensible man like yourself would even think that living in fear is any way to live at all."

Look around you. Visit the nearest airport. (Don't try to go past the security checkpoint, of course.)

People are voting with their feet to not fly. If they have to fly, they fly. But if it's discretionary, they are tending to cancel or delay. Probably the numbers will increase each week, maybe getting back to 60% or so of pre-911 levels.

Arguing that "sensible" people should be travelling and shopping is OK as a diversion, I guess, but people are voting with their feet and their wallets.

And they're doing other things. More telephone conference. Heavy DVD purchases. Stocking up on guns and such. They've shifted their discretionary spending, probably a healthy thing.

Claiming that these new habits equal "living in fear" is nonsensical.

Re: I for one am not going to avoid traveling or shopping

I'll be flying this week, and am not particularly concerned about it. Co-workers who flew last week are saying the waits are pretty much down to normal, and every passenger is getting their own row to sit in.

Given the present lack of crowding on all fights, this may be the perfect time to fly.
