For as far back as I can remember, airlines have always had financial trouble. Think of how many have gone belly up or disappeared through mergers and acquisitions. They're constantly reinventing themselves.

Eastern
Central (merged into Frontier)
Ozark (bought by TWA)
Piedmont (bought by USAir - now US Airways - soon to be bankrupt)
Air Florida
Pan Am
PSA (Pacific Southwest Airlines, bought by USAir - now US Airways - soon to be bankrupt)
Western (bought by Delta Air Lines)
Western Pacific
Air Cal (bought By American Airlines)
Morris Air (bought by Southwest Airlines)
Air South
Southern
Braniff
Peoplexpress (bought By Continental Airlines)
Kiwi
Reno Air (bought By American Airlines)
Northeastern
Eastwind
Republic (bought by Northwest Airlines)
New York Air

I think that an important point that you make is that this tragedy should not be an opportunity for our government representatives to see our support of them as a "rubberstamp" to all actions taken right now. Disagreeing with a policy doesn't automatically mean that we don't support our government.

>>The theme that's constantly being repeated in the Media is go out and spend, support America, go back to living your lives. There's a lot of people out there who can't do that. The airlines alone have laid off 121,000 people but there were hundreds of other companies that were laying off people before this attack happened. Companies have spending and hiring freezes in force. Retired people have seen the proceeds of their 401k's and retirement funds disappear.<<

That's a very good point, Smoothsail.

And while we're thinking about "reinventing" in order to stay afloat......when is the last time we ever heard about a major "restructuring" or "downsizing" of the Federal Government.

Instead, what we are witnessing is the creation of yet another bureaucracy.

I had so hoped that perhaps this crisis would shake up some of the politicians out of the "business as usual" mode of thinking and recognize that people are hurting financially.

The biggest drain on our economy right now from my POV isn't that Americans aren't "spending enough" (look at credit card debt and delinquency) the problem is too much confiscation of earnings. Layer upon layer of taxation, much of it going to redundant bureaucracies.

Does anyone remember the Grace Commission Report established under Ronald Reagan?

My question to the politicians would be to quote RR...."Are we better off now, than we were then".
