Ted,

I really don't get it....why are the PC makers encouraging a set up whereby there is only one chip supplier...INTC? You would think the duopoly is to their advantage.

They each hoped the other guys would do it (support both Intel and AMD). However, when it comes to sink or swim, you cut whatever you have to to survive. Can you blame Gateway for simplifying and saving? Guess it's on HP/CPQ now to keep two chip sources going.

Tony

O' Kay....

RE:"why are the PC makers encouraging a set up whereby there is only one chip supplier...INTC? You would think the duopoly is to their advantage"

They are hurting big time and scrambling to streamline.
Intel has the ability to match advertizing dollars.
They have the higher Mhz...
They really have little choice but to go Intel.

Of course, in the end it will all blow up in their face when Intel jacks up their CPU prices but for now these boxmakers are just trying to survive...

Ted
I thought there was some talk of micron pc but they seems to advertise amd systems. Compaq?
I really don't get it....
intel figured that intel can not stay miles ahead of amd anymore so, I suspect, intel put a lot of pressure on oems.
Expense reduction and reliability is a complete bs since you can buy amd 850 gamer extreme from cyberpower for just above 1K now. I bought one of those and it beats dell workstation at work in pretty much everything I do. Also intel is taking advantage of the fact that because of the slowdown government eased the restrictions on monopolies.
