They are "Northern" now I think because the Taliban pushed them out of the south. Massood was from the Panjshir Valley which is on the South of the Hindu Kush main range and only around 50 miles from Kabul. Their last attempt at government was a disaster because Pakistan supported various factions I am told (particularly Hekmatyar's group) to fight against the others and no-one gave any aid to start rebuilding the country.

singajane, I think best bet stuff here would be for all governments to leave and stop funding these so-called "group of tribes and minorities" with weapons. Just having our governments force banks to freeze terrorist-linked assets is a great start, more needs to be done.

Your point is well taken. It is in our short term interest to assist the Northern Alliance, but who knows about the long term interest? I don't know, but hope, that those who truly understand the issues have thought them through. If history is any guide, the answer to that is "no."

On the other hand, history teaches us that most people in power don't really know what is going on, and do the best they can with insufficient information. In other words, it's not a new problem. We don't know enough to learn from history, and so are doomed to repeat it.
