It's called "charter group" in the theory of ethnicity. The first group to found a new society gets to set some of the ground rules. So the language and legal system in the US and many other things reflect England. But there are lots of German characteristics of America (if only the beer, hamburgers and apple pies :) ) and all those other groups effects can be picked out too. When I was teaching this stuff (GG104: The Cultural Landscape at BU) I was surprised when I found out just how big the German community was (I knew it was significant in some regions, especially Pennsylvania and the mid-West). Since then I learned a lot more about it. Societies in ethnic conflict are ones where the charter group is disputed or non-existent. David
