I'm not surprised at your reaction to Mr. Gould's essay, Greg. Your religious zealotry has blinded you to others' humanity.

All that talk of "good" and "evil", "Holy duty" and the "sublime", from someone who is convinced we are nothing but advanced pond scum.

I let this post set there all afternoon. I really didn't know what to say but felt I had to say something. Then I wrote the following paragraph, which I couldn't submit yesterday due to server errors. So I've had some time to reflect on it.

Some of us may understand such things as good or sublime is a somewhat different way than you, but mocking our appreciation of them denies our humanity. Whether our humanity models the image and likeness of your deity or derives from pond scum, we all are born into it. Whether or not there is an afterlife, we all have a lifetime on this earth during which we can apply ourselves to getting along with each other--or not. Lately, it seems to me that you are expressing indifference to shared humanity.

It's now very early in the morning. I just saw on TV an interview with a Taliban member. He was describing the difference between them and us. We live in this world, he said, and they live for the next world. It seems to me that he identified very well that bright line between what is constructive in our society and what is disconcerting. I'm starting to think that you are positioning yourself on the far side of the bright line.
