Dear Rollcast: Man that was too deep for me!! I did want to mention something I learned on T/V (might have been the history channel) a few days ago.
There was a time, long ago, that the Middle East led the World (certainly the West) in Mathmatics, most of the Sciences and all. People from the West came to the Middle East TO LEARN the secrets. This caused an AWAKENING of Science throughout the West which eagerly sought (in spite of some religious persecution) to advance the knowledge. At about the same time, the Middle East turned inward unto themselves and their religion (Islam)and refused to accept the accomplishments of the West or even to have much to do with them. The result is what you see today. A successful, vibrant Western Civilization and a Middle East who, if they were not fortunate to have vast quantities of oil, would still be living in goatskin tents and driving their camels across the desert from oasis to oasis. I think that if I were a Middle Easterner, rather than resent the West for its accomplishments, I would resent the leaders who brought this disaster upon the peoples. JDN
