Very interesting article. I'd submit that the "megacap effect" was due, at least in part, to the growth in popularity of index fund investing, particularly as professed and "closet" indexers used baskets of stocks (as opposed to all those in the index) to mirror index performance. The baskets were made up of the stocks that, statistically, accounted for nearly all the movement in the indexes - naturally the largest cap stocks.

Of course, the mantra "buy the leaders [at any price] and hold" contributed.
