the Windows Task Manager hasn't kept up with progress. It doesn't show what DLL and what function are being executed by each instance of rundll.exe.

Message 16376472

perhaps that program would provide the info for each instance.

Jon Tara:

I'd be interested in some of your suggestions.

When a program would hang, I would use ctrl-alt-del to find it and then cancel the task and everything would be fine. Now if cancel the task the computer freezes and I have to shut down.

What should I be looking for?

TIA,

Dominick

Jon,

Back in the day of the 8080, I used to want to know everything I could about what was going on in a machine. Now I just want the thing to work!!! LOL It sure is nice having you guys who know your stuff around here to check in with though.

Before getting your reply, I was re-thinking the idea of enabling the second Rundll.exe at startup and instead disabling the first one. What do I care about power management if I'm sitting here using the machine all day? The power is on, the machine is running, and I don't care if it's converting a few extra joules to heat doing what I want it to do. And I don't need any more processes using up resources.

The startup lines I see when I run MSCONFIG.EXE are exactly the same, and they say:

Load Power Profile Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll, LoadCurrentPwrScheme

It still seems odd to me that it has to run the same thing twice, and it seems to be working just fine running it once. Maybe it will be happy not running it at all?? Then if I ever see it in the Task Manager list after a CTRL+Alt+Del a la Dominick's post, I can assume it was brought in by some other program??

I may try this, unless somebody thinks it would be dangerous.

The plot thickens.

Dan
