AMD has given the Palominos their 1500 plus etc. names, and not used the clock speeds of the processors, to move away from direct comparisons with Intel processor speeds. Or to be more precise, it's given them names to suggest faster clock speeds than they've got, based on their rule of thumb that AMD processors match or beat the performance of Intel processors which are 300MHz faster.

A direct admission by AMD that even their newest processors, XP1800 is beaten by Intel's fastest P4. Furthermore that is based on AMD's own rating system.

Clearly MegaHurts.

To get this idea across, the Athlon XPs will be sold using the marketing jargon - quantispeed technology. System builders have been warned not to mention the actual clock speeds of the chips, but to talk of quantispeed processors, to suggest they're turbocharged. ®

So what color IS the sky in the AMD marketing division's world??? No wonder Gateway dumped them...

That's very funny...AMD warning OEMs what to do...Intel/OEMS/the market rags will have a field day with this...& customers in the end will feel jolted. AMD is about to lose any credibibilty that they had left.

Intel announces marketing technology breakthrough

"AMD Palominos to ship 9 October
By Robert Blincoe
"For example, AMD says an XP 1800 plus, which runs at 1.53GHz, would perform as well as a 1.83GHz Intel chip - hence, that's why it's called an 1800 plus.

Just saw this go by on Yahoodi, the Israeli site:

SANTA CLARA, CA (Routers News Service): Intel Corporation today responded to AMD's announcement that processors will be named by "potential" or "hypothesized" speeds instead of by actual clock speeds.

The product formerly known as the 2GHz Pentium 4 will henceforth be known as the "Pentium 4 4000." System builders have been been advised to stress the "4 GHz" aspects of parts of the circuitry.

"Two can play that game. Intel's move into Terahertz (TM) computing will completely blow away AMD's trivial Quantispeed (TM) marketing technology," according to Intel spokesbimbo Melanie Rightspeed.

You know, I thought that the almost universal reaction when this AMD philosophy was first rumoured would cause AMD to reconsider. I guess not.

It reminds me of those old Meister Brau commercials, the ones that said, "Tastes as Good as Budweiser, but costs less."

No one believed Meister Brau then, and no one will believe AMD now. All that will be accomplished is that AMD will reinforce Intel's brand value.
