Imagine that the Taliban were, at one point, viewed as the best alternative, because the prior factionalism committed atrocities more repugnant.

What civilized society would support that? None. But in a tribal society, the concept of national unity remains a theory and at one point, relatively speaking, the Taliban were more civil than the factions.

I think it's evolved into the old maxim: power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
