Hawk, the incident was clearly embarrassing all around and was hushed up. But any Israeli interest that would compel them to deliberately sink an American ship -- their biggest ally, almost their only ally -- would have had to be pretty damn 'vital', immediate life-and-death vital, and I've never heard a convincing explanation of what that interest was. Conspiracy theorists never allow for the very large number of f---ups that occur even in peacetime, let alone in the fog of war.
