It seems to most that we are in a dangerous situation. A handful of mindless drooling on themselves fanatics who have seen their power go up in smoke since the 11th are still trying to hang on, but it isn't working. Their leaders have even seen the writing on the wall but for this handful it must be like being on an abandoned island and they don't have any coping skills because they have always felt the government would be there for them. Now that the fed's are spending their time on 1 of the few things they are around for, safety of our shores and citizens, they don't have time for the richy's of the world.

Well we can increase our ability to deal with terrorists quite easily in the existing defense budget, as much of it is wasted on infrastructure in the US to fight WWII again. We can divert some of these monies into fighting the real enemy terrorism. And as you point out the world is very dangerous from a biological and chemical viewpoint so we must be prepared as well which will take time. What is virtually useless is the shield, which may never work and does nothing against the real threats of today. So these efforts should be redirected against the real threats.

In any case I just don't see a large increase in defense spending unless our country wants to waste a lot of money. We can use the funds much wiser to bolster the economy
