...I would say that their chances of survival are probably the same as those cavemen they emulate.

Are you suggesting, given enough time, they may actually evolve? This must be their biggest fear. I can only assume this as they find dogs to be "dirty". Why? My dog has a naturally better sense of civility than they do. In fact, my dog knows the meaning of the word "agape" better than any man I've ever known.

"It is almost as if we are dealing with a different species in Afghanistan? After all they do live in mud huts and caves not unlike prehistoric Neandertals.

The general population is downtrodden beyond rebellion.
Poverty, lack of education and such makes them susceptible to occupation by international criminals and rapists.
Rhwanda....hundreds of thousands succumbed to death and dismemberment by machetes.
Somalia... warlords own and run the country.
Haiti...poverty ridden country overwhelmed and dominated by criminal elements.
Many many examples.
They MUST want to be freed and live a better life. I don't know that a broad sweep of the paintbrush is justified when describing general populations of a country.
If we never rise above our self-righteous observations and conclusions on "whats good for the world", what hope is there?
"The world is but one country and mankind is its citizen"

Well, if you read the Glover book I keep recommending, Humanity: A Moral History of the Twentieth Century, you will see that the Taliban is really right in line with their predecessors--others who perpetrated war, torture & atrocity.

I do feel we're in a new era of history because of two things: one, nations are no longer geogrpahically bounded, as I said. It's a global community, and the internet has hastened that. So we have to redefine the word nation. And secondly, some very dangerous technology may be in the hands of those who, becaues they are not physically, geographically, int he old fashioned sense, a nation, can weild it without fear of retribution. Countries will go to war if they have a decent chance of winning, but they won't initiate a war if their entire country is going to be nuked. But the word nation no longer works. I do think its a new era.
