AMD Prepares Marketing to Differentiate Itself From Intel

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. is expected to unveil a new marketing plan to better differentiate itself from its rival Intel Corp., which has outpaced it in introducing faster products, at a press conference on Oct. 9. AMD's Chief Executive Jerry Sanders will host the event at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco. According to the company, there will be product demonstrations and "strategic partners" on hand to discuss the initiative. The company declined to give more details. AMD, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., is looking to shift the focus on microprocessors from clock speeds, or how many instructions a chip processes in one second, to overall performance, or how fast the chip is able to complete a task in an application. The company said late last month that it would initiate a new campaign to this effect.
