Haim, i agree we can see it in terms of a confrontation between the two civilizations...exactly as predicted by Huntington a few years ago.
and the Taliban certainly set the grim example with their unyielding theocracy of a view of the world inimical to our most dearly held principles - we'll never be able to reconcile their system/ideology with ours.
so it is probably impossible to avoid the conflict - and if you recall, Italy's Berlusconi recently voiced inadvertently what most Western heads of state are probably thinking and saying privately.

"Now that Russia is gone the fight is more pointed "........

Where has Russia gone? Last I heard, a fellow named Vladimir Putin was president of a Russia which is trying to subdue Chechen "terrorists". Many consider that the Chechens are fighting for their freedom amd have suffered abonimably at the hands of the Russians. Is terrorism any less reprehensible if carried out by the state -- through missiles and helicopter gunships? The population which has been subjugated and is being brutalised (e.g. Chechens and Palestinians) don't have armored cars and tanks and helicopters so they fight back with whatever means they have. Since they don't possess helicopters and F16s their means of delivery is the suicide bomber.

None of this is meant in any way, shape or form to excuse the killing of innocent human beings. But there is another side to this issue and if we are honest we should be ready to examine it. ( Sorry for butting in on the thread ).
