Gold produces security, in acting as a vehicle for capital preservation, as real money, 'the ultimate form of payment' as Easy Al called it only a couple three years ago ... sure this can be seen in a negative light, but it can also be seen as a positive role - it is good to preserve capital because it will be useful in the future .... and its use is a human construct as much as is that of paper or electronic transfer, the only difference with gold is that it cannot be printed with abandon at the whim of politicians ... this is a major advantage ... and gold can be made quite efficient to use in combination with technology, an SI friend runs this site and acts as a broker for electronic gold currencies - goldcurrencies.ca

It's more than 'barbarians at the gate', much more ... we were already in a beginner gold bull prior to 11/09 ... see, obviously i'm not a permagoldbugger, if i had been when you mentioned 'barbarians' i would have thought you were referring to the gnomes of Zurich who have been playing the short side and knocking it down for five years -g- ... the whole carry trade thing was a factor in the gold bear, i think, and the fundamentals there have changed in the last year ... the PoG is making a pretty nice chart lately, imho

But i don't hold much of the metal itself, the power is in the stocks, and the challenge is in picking the stocks that do best in the eventual PoG scenario, choosing between vast amounts of high-cost gold with a drooy.naz which needs about PoG500 to start turning a profit, or something like mfl.to which has less total reserve but which would be economical at current PoG ... still leverage in it, plenty, and i tend to play it safer like that

My favourite major - franco-nevada.com ... although i do have concerns about them not yet doing anything much with their near-billion loonies in cash, they may miss the boat if the underpriced assets all around get bid up on them ... but that hasn't happened yet ... their site has some essays by the prez, goldbugger propaganda ... they're good businessmen, would have done well in any sector

I really don't see man's use of gold as being detrimental to his innovation and development, not at all, quite the contrary, it is complementary imho .... quizá soy azteca ;-) ... but for lubrication of all the vital 'highways, factories, telecommunication networks, R & D facilities and the human capital' it takes a trustworthy currency, and until a better is invented, there's gold.
