"Also, by having 2 different schemes, AMD is fragmenting its own market. "

Segmenting is a more appropriate word here. They are trying to do that with the MP vs. XP processors, probably with not a whole lot of success. I'd rather see them segmented their markets this way instead of by removing SMP capability, for example. With a built-in memory controller, SledgeHammers likely won't need a northbridge at all. The class of machines that SledgeHammer is aimed at generally doesn't have much in the way of video...

Joe: Also, by having 2 different schemes, AMD is fragmenting its own market. There will be a need for 2 northbridge / seminorthbridge chipsets to support both clawhammer and sledgehammer. This fragmentation may in fact kill Sledgehammer in the marketplace.

AMD will be making all the SledgeHammer chipsets themselves. They've said this from the get-go.

One thing that I found a little wierd is the 3 HT channels going into Sledgehammer + pins for local memory access. That means a lot more pins than the current CPUs. I wonder if an HT switch or wouuld not be more cost effective. This would make the CPU cheaper, and make it easy to implement a shigle CPU Sledgehammer system without a switch, n-way implementation of higher end systems with a switch.

It actually looks like Sledge won't be available in a single processor version at all - both from the 2-8 way slides we've seen, and the 3 HT channels.
