Dave,

there's all kinds of ways of protecting your system -- I don't do frequent backups, but I get some peace of mind by running two hard drives and keeping all my data and O/S clones on the second drive. The clone should be an O/S that was installed, configured, and cloned before having done any "work". This way, when you install it, it's fresh and gives you a lot of service. It takes an hour or two to update it with your Favorites, mail, cookies, etc., but it's orders of magnitude easier than installing Windows from scratch.

I would feel even better by keeping a 3rd HDD off the computer or RW CD's or DVD's, because my data on the second drive is still very vulnerable.

Good to know Axiontech is a decent supplier. You probably could have RMA'd directly to the HDD manufacturer too.

Dave,

Been doing the same drill myself, though I don't think it's been as difficult for me. Windows installed fine, and I chose to reinsall all my software from scratch so I would be sure of not reloading any corrupted files. I figured I could restore individual things from the backup I created if I wanted. Of course, it was not quite that easy. My machine was configured when I got it, and there were some things on it that don't work anymore. No doubt there are authorization files and application extensions I have backed up that did not get replaced, but I have no clue what the file names are. Does anyone have a source for identifying/associating Windows and Program folder file names with applications and utilities?

Dan
