You are correct, (I believe) that the plane did not pass over the White House. The article states that the plane turned away from a flight path toward the White House (before hitting restricted airspace) turning toward the Pentagon from the northwest (plane heading south east). The plane then executes a 270 degree turn, while shedding altitude, and hits the Pentagon while heading west-southwest.
