Closed-end muni funds seem like a good place to get some decent interest rates. Most yield between 5% and 6% and are completely tax free (unless you're subject to the AMT).

Great post, Iso. I like MO, with a 4.7% dividend and the steadiest earnings in the market. But looking at that balance sheet, their debt is even higher than CAG's. I think they'll pay down half of it with the KFT IPO, though.

I believe that if you factor in dividends, the Dow returned 2-3% a year from 1966-1982. I agree that dividends will become much more important in the future.

NEM- looks good, but it's very thinly traded. I assume that's the case with most preferreds, though. ARC common looks pricey to me, at 2x sales and 19x earnings, but I don't know that sector at all.

Someone mentioned a NYC commercial real estate trust (can't remember the name), given the obvious need for office space there now.

Have been looking into this issue, and will have to look more closely now. The cash sitting in my trading account is now losing ground to inflation (although I believe the CPI has been flat for 3 months now; on a TTM basis, it's 2.7%).
