The situation is analogous to entering an unknown, somewhat disreputable part of the city.

I seem to be sending out an unintended message. I understand why people use aliases on SI. I don't think any less of those doing so for reason of caution.

Mossberg's point, I think, was that the Internet is, or should be, maturing, hopefully to the point that it's no longer a disreputable part of the city but rather someplace where people using aliases for disreputable reasons are outlaws just like they are in 3D and reputable people don't need to.

You, too, would be distrustful of, say, a new neighbor if you found he was using an alias.
