Actually, the situation on the Net is closer to that which obtained in 18th century England, when it was commonplace to use a nom de plume in periodicals. No one would have thought of it as an "alias", as if one were trying to pass yourself off as someone else. Does anyone really believe that I am representing myself to be Mr. Neocon? Also, I doubt the Internet will ever become reputable enough for everyone to be comfortable. I have encountered a jackass who honestly thought I was a Mossad agent, someone who was mentally unstable and in the throes of even weirder paranoid delusions, a couple of exceptionally virulent anti- Semites (one of whom plugged a neo- Nazi site, and liked to talk about having one on his "list"), and other assorted whack- jobs. Most of them were far from where I live, but I also have encountered a lot of people from the New York/Washington corridor, and sometime, some whacko might turn out to live in Takoma Park......
