I basically agree that the situation is at a stalemate until some external condition changes. This might either result in the Palestinians changing strategy or the international community given tacit permission to the Israelis to destroy the PA. I don't think anyone will impose a 'solution' because the Arab world will not accept any solution that leaves Israel standing.

Your suggestion that Israel find some "quiet and decisive means" of dealing with the suicide bombers is not practical, as you will see if you think about it. The PA controls the ground that Hamas and Islamic Jihad operate from. They are of course obliged under the Oslo accords to control their radicals but we all know this is a joke. Hamas and Islamic Jihad are careful never to present military targets; on the contrary, these outfits always prefer to use city neighborhoods as human shields. Going in on the ground, even with special forces, would result in huge gunbattles right through dense urban neighborhoods. Using undercover operatives to kidnap the Hamas leaders is nearly impossible since they have tight security. So Israel uses a combination of very accurate intelligence and high tech weapons to do surgical strikes with minimal loss of Israeli soldiers and civilians. I don't see what else they can do other than sit with their hands folded.

I too wish that Lebanon and Jordan (whose young king I find particularly impressive) led the Middle East. Unfortunately they are by far the least powerful countries in it. Lebanon isn't even a independent country but a vassal state of Syria.
