Re: "A smart company will treat their employees fairly because in most cases they are the companies' greatest asset." That used to be the case, IMO. Don't think it's true anymore. The guiding rule today is "maximize profits at all costs." If that means pink-slipping loyal workers of 30 years, so be it. Workers = liability.

Re: "The unions do little (more like nothing imo) to encourage the individuals to advance." Virtually all of the managers at my plant were union rank and file at one time and advanced on the basis of job performance.

Re: "Is there anything other than the written contract?" Yes. There are a variety number of federal laws specifically addressing management-labor issues.
