The guiding rule today is "maximize profits at all costs." If that means pink-slipping loyal workers of 30 years, so be it. Workers = liability. Re: "The unions do little (more like nothing imo) to encourage the individuals to advance." Virtually all of the managers at my plant were union rank and file at one time and advanced on the basis of job performance. Re: "They make the management the enemy, and the most succesful companies don't have that adversarial relationship between worker and management." Every company has the union it deserves. Re: "Is there anything other than the written contract?" Yes. There are a variety number of federal laws specifically addressing management-labor issues.
