Gov't looks to speed up SMS interconnection
2001/09/28 16:09

(Infocast News) M. H. Au, Senior Assistant Director of Telecommunications, said that the Office of the Telecommunications Authority (OFTA) is aware of the delay of interconnection of the short message services (SMS) in Hong Kong by the six mobile network operators and hopes to fix the problem as soon as possible.

He mentioned that according to the terms of licences, the operators are required to interconnect their SMS services, either directly or through an intermediate platform. He said that the OFTA is not opposed to gateway connection.

However, the operators have blamed the the Government for making the connection complicated by allowing cellular subscribers to carry their numbers. It is said that the Israeli company providing the connection platform would rather make a compensation to give up the project.
