Third, there are other issues

Not to mention the fact that the cost of the iron is only a small part of the total cost of ownership.

It is one thing to be a good sized company with some solid IT people on staff who can take care of some of these "low cost" boxes, but I keep being surprised by the small companies (including customers of mine!) who think they are saving money by cobbling together some clone box and then having senior management spending hours and hours of lost time in the support process.

Re. <<"large servers" could be Intel based>>
While Intel processors have been lashed together in high volume to approach the capabilities of machines based on more capable processors, the number of instances is relatively small. My guess is that there are relatively few Intel-based machines with more than 8 processors. Intel-based systems approaching the power of systems selling above $500K have to represent a insignificant percentage IMHO. I have never seen any data showing the percentage of really powerful systems that are Intel based. The question doesn't seem to arise.
