Dear Pravin:

You forget that the XP1800+ will be as fast as a P4 running at 2.3GHz. Palomino at 1.73G model XP2100+ will outrun a P4 at 2.6GHz. 2.4GHz Northwood will not be more than a 2.6GHz P4. A 1.75GHz Palomino (10.5*166FSB (333DDR)) would give even a 2.8GHz P4 at 133FSB (533QDR) fits. 2.4G Northwood is not that scary.

Pete

"AMD must get to 0.13u, 512 KB cache Athlon ASAP"

The 0.13 micron is a lot more important than a 512k cache. If AMD is to be believed, they already have started wafers for 0.13 micron in Q3, so they should be trickling out by late Q1 2002. Besides, Intel has yet to really ship 0.13 micron in any quantity, so there might not be all that many Northwoods until that time period anyway...

>Northwood, with double the L2 cache will perform very well and let Intel sell them for $500+. AMD will have to contend with $120 1.8 Ghz P4s. AMD must get to 0.13u, 512 KB cache Athlon ASAP.<

Wrong on both counts.

Intel will sell some Northwood processors for $500+, but not many. The ASP for Northwood will be even less than the current ASP for Willamette.

AMD must get to 0.13u, but 512 KB L2 cache will do AMD no good at all. Note that the lowest speed grade Athlon is not selling for significantly more than the same speed grade Duron in spite of having more cache and higher performance.
