RE: " ... forced conversions are a fixture of Christian, but not Moslem ... "

There's truth to that as far as the Philippines is concerned. The Spaniards who ruled the Islands for 400 years Forcefully converted the natives from Islam to Christianity through the use of Guns and Cannons against Bolos and Knives. But not all were conquered: --- Lapu-Lapu, the Chieftain of Mactan Island killed Ferdinand Magellan, the discoverer of the Philippines for Spain. About 5% remained Muslim and the rest --- 80% Roman Catholics and 15% Variations of Catholicism, Protestantisms and Others.

It's amazing that the Americans who next ruled the Islands for a period of 37 years did not Force the natives to convert to Protestantism. Americans are Great! They as Christians are different --- they respect other's beliefs. They even help the peoples they conquer to rebuild from the ashes.

Jacob, you are quite right, am a scion of those that Turquemevada gave the choice "Convert or die", except my ancestors (Toledo, Spain) escaped to Amsterdam. The pogrom in Russia, however, had nothing to do with conversion, it was simple hatred, as far as I can remember from the various books of the period, there was no choice of "convert or die", there was only "run or die" (g).
