I think it's time to go rummage through my son's baseball card collection!

Investors Are Cashing In On Bonds...Barry Bonds?
by Dana Salzarulo (editor of OTCWeekly) 10-04-2001

In these economically challenging times where the financial markets continue to slide and the US is on the brink of a recession, sports collectors are prospering on Barry Bonds sport's cards and memorabilia.

The long dormant hobby of sport's card collecting has recently come alive thanks to Barry Bonds. The three time National League MVP who plays for the San Francisco Giants, is on the verge of becoming baseball's new home run king surpassing 1998's mark of 70 set by St. Louis great, Mark McGwire. ThePit.com, the trading card's version of wallstreet, is one place where collectors and investors have been buying and selling Barry's cards. Since thePit.com's launch, Bond's cards have been the most active by far of any other athlete this year with over 20,000 graded cards been traded. Along with the activity, Bond's rookie cards have climbed significantly also. On average, his rookies have climbed more than 100% this year and 50% in the last 30 days alone. His 1986 Fleer Update card, then with the Pittsburgh Pirates, (graded NM-MT+) which was as low as $28, has recently sold for $100 at both ThePit and the popular Ebay.com. His 1987 Fleer rookie (graded NM-MT+) was as low as $49 earlier in the year, is now a hefty $115 up from $85 just one month ago. It gets better...Barry's Topps Traded in a perfect 10, or as collectors say "gem mint", now trades in the $600-$700 range and his "gem mint" 1987 Fleer sold just the other day on thePit for $1,100. So...are you thinking about raiding your ten year old's shoe box of cards under his bed yet?

Speculators argue that Barry's cards could have soared even higher if it were not for Bonds being frowned upon by the public for his lack of cooperation and communication with the media and fans. In some respect, his cards have not elevated similar to McGwire's cards in 1998, but to solely base the lack of an all out craze because of his public persona is unfair. Yes, Barry is quiet and may have rubbed a few reporters the wrong way, but hey...he is attempting to win the NL West first and whatever records that get broken during the season is gravy. How about the economy, is having a Bonds rookie as important as food on the table or gas in your car? Another key point is that Bonds is chasing a three year old record, not a twenty-seven year old record of 61 home runs that Roger Maris set in the dramatic year of 1961. Nonetheless, 2001 will always be remembered for the tragedy of the world trade center no matter how many home runs Barry hits. The world will continue trading his cards as he remains the center of interest in the sports world. Unfortunately, his cards will not revive the economy, but overall America's national pastime will help bring people of all ages together in these emotionally fragile times and maybe, just maybe...help us forget, even if its for a brief moment, all the bad things that are going on in the world. *END*
========================================================
For those that wish to own a Barry Bonds Rookie who hit his 71st Home Run this evening...I have a few of his graded Rookies I would be willing to part with...

87 fleer PSA 9 (NrM-MT+) I have 3...I will take the 3 highest offers of $150+

87 fleer USA graded 10 (GEM MINT) I have just one extra and will accept the Top offer over $500.

Congrats to Barry! 71 and counting!
