they will lose cases for those who hire them and be forced to get respectable jobs.

Thanks for that laugh!

I read the article you posted. Nothing for me to disagree with: basic common sense. Personally, I think that categories of color, etc. are gross methods of assessing people and situations, and are impediments to the subtleties available to more insightful people. Also, it often overlooks the real danger which may come in a much more innocent package. However--it is a start, isn't it?

I remember once in Mazatlan when I became tired of the interminable shopping and decided to leave the ladies and explore the real city. After walking for a couple of hours I ended up in a very seedy part of town. I ducked into a bar for safety and immediately knew I was in a bit of trouble.

Two prostitutes began to work me from a nearby table. In the meantime thugs at the bar began talking about me to the prostitutes and to one another. They were planning to rob me at the least, and beyond that--who knows. I ordered a fresh drink as misdirection so nobody would suspect me of leaving, and when it was brought I asked for the donde esta el bano por favor...and I was out a back door about 20 seconds later.

I don't know if I profiled these peole, or if I assessed them. The fact that they were Mexican, poor, and unemployed was not sufficient to judge them in the way I did. None of those things made them thugs or thieves. It was the details which made them a danger to me. They telegraphed their thoughts and their intentions, and I had met them before--here and there and on the stair.

Again, the world is full of people who only follow the law of the jungle: Take what you are able to take without getting caught. Everyone should always be alert to their surroundings and the people around them. Fortunately for most, they are able to choose who they interact with to a large degree. Not so, say, for a 7-11 clerk...
