So Bin Laden could preach ideas which you consider evil, but you still wouldn't call him an evil person if his intention was to "try to help" people??

Solon it is true that I just tossed off that answer quickly but one part was both clear and completely ignored by you. - "and if the practical effects of their efforts are not very harmful."

Giving it more thought I would say someone who is deluded about evil is not necessarily evil, but they might be as dangerous as those that are evil and they might have to be stopped. Those who deliberately use evil means to achieve ends that they might think are noble (and obviously those who use evil means to selfish ends), I would also call evil.
