Hi Terry, thank you for your response.

Yes, I don't want to say anything provocative or upsetting because I am aware that folks in the US must be feeling very sore these days. I am also aware of the enormous problems confronting the military action in Afghanistan or wherever so I don't want to add to anyone's anxiety particularly if they or their loved ones are directly involved in the campaign.

And yes again, I do believe that the Clinton administration can be held responsible for the security failure which has resulted in the present predicament. As far as I can see, it will now be virtually impossible to penetrate Al Q'aeda with spies whereas it could have been done had the US maintained its involvement after the fall of the USSR.

As I am writing I see, on TV, that they have just bombed various Afghan cities with missiles. I hope this will satisfy those who have been shouting for a military response but, IMO, this will only aggravate the problem and bring more Muslim fanatics into the jihad. I am also apprehensive as to what other evil tricks they have up their sleeve.

For my money, I would have preferred to see some form of dialog or negotiation with those who may have been aggrieved by previous US foreign policy. Better a million words than one bullet. I might be missing something but I do not find the alleged grievances unreasonable or impossible to meet.

Anyway, the die has now been cast and we will have to see what happens.

My sincere good wishes go out to those who are doing their best to bring peace to the world.
