re: "Seems to me that Toshiba may be looking at flash memory applications that go beyond substituting for disk drives in industrial,..."
yes, the report (eetimes) says "the company is desperate to find new markets for NAND flash..."

The mechanical disk substitution is a good way to use up a bunch of NAND chips.
With all that new capacity coming online, and prices dropping, every "new" usage of flash is welcome.

Years ago we were using SSDs (solid state disks) in high end computers, to speed up access to specific data.
each device was 128 (later 512) Mbytes of RAM, backed by a redundant battery and a real HDD just in case a power outage lasted more than the battery.
They were incredibly expensive and awful fast. (access time was in the microseconds)
By putting select portions of the database or other frequently hit stuff on those devices, we were able to speed up the whole system operations by three-four times (incredible!)

Now, web servers are a good fit for fast, huge Flashdrives... how many web servers are out there?
That should be a good market at least until Recordable DVDs will be substituted by flash stamps.
