Eric,

You are by far more enlightened than an average person.

Lack of knowledge about our foreign policy has resulted in the support of most racist and inhuman regime (Israel) in a "developed" country. When the world condemned Israel as a "racist" nation, we blindly pulled out of the conference. Sharon is a documented war criminal responsible for slaughter of tens of thousands of Palestinians women and children.

I do strongly disagree with your assessment of Bin Laden and his supporters. Those lowlives have turned people misery into hatred and mass criminal activity that worsens the cause they claim to have. Palestinians in the refugee camps will be no better off because of this. Bin Laden and his supporters must be found and taken out.

Mani

Eric, <I find the couching of our military exercises in Afghanistan as an epic struggle against evil extremely offensive, and threatening to people's ability to grasp true, unmitigated evil.>

If Osama bin Laden or the Taliban had the power and resources of a Hitler or a Stalin, who knows what unspeakable crimes would have been committed in "defense of Islam"?

These guys are evil. There is no debate. And I find it offensive to even suggest that the terrorists should even be considered "freedom fighters" by any twist of logic.

But of course, it is debatable whether America is totally innocent in this conflict or not.

Eric,

I commend your posts.

I dont agree with everything you have written but i appreciate your attempts to see both sides.

We need to keep things in balance.

Millions of americans have been murdered for profit by a US industry.

But there is little outrage.

We have to keep balance as we move forward.

regards,

Kash

Eric,

I don't think this act comes anywhere near those past crimes. I find the couching of our military exercises in Afghanistan as an epic struggle against evil extremely offensive, and threatening to people's ability to grasp true, unmitigated evil.

I don't think the administration is guilty of what you claim, that is losing perspective. The big difference that you are discounting is the fact that the victims were mainly Americans, on American soil. American people and American government is going to punish those responsible, and hopefully reduce probability of something like this happening again.

I think the US was happily retreating back less involvement abroad prior to 9/11, which in fact is the stated goal of Bin Laden, and he basically achieved just the opposite.

Do you think this was an accident? Or was it part of the plan to radicalize muslims in order to seize power by the radical groups in various muslim countries, to consolidate power and than to march onward, to spread islam, by intimidation and conquest?

I don't know. It is a distinct possibility, but regardless of this speculation, we have a plenty of justification to do what we are doing.

Joe

Eric k:

"I find the couching of our military exercises in Afghanistan as an epic struggle against evil extremely offensive, and threatening to people's ability to grasp true, unmitigated evil."

1. The death of 7000 innocent victims is unquestionably an unmitigated evil, an unmitigated evil forced upon the civilized world and forced upon the inoocent victims and their families and friends by a deranged mindset, deluded in its wayward sense of religious purpose. Notwithstanding dealing with a maniacal mindset, a menu of options was proposed by the world coalition, one, of which was the "couching of military options". There was another more peaceful option which the Taliban did choose to forego.

The menu of options proposed by the "world coalition" in response to the Sept. 11 massacre of innocent victims (actions of God's will as intimated by the delusional OBL...), although options that are perhaps severe from certain (sick???) perspectives, do seem to reflect an infinitely more humane and civilized mindset than did the cowardly terrorist attack on Sept. 11...

2. If OBL were half the religious leader he deems himself to be, he would yield himself up to the international courts, thereby choosing a route more fitting of the martyrdom he is proposing his followers choose than the cowardly route currently chosen by him. Those who die for his cause do not die for God but die for OBL's cause, a cause that has been irrevocably stained by the cowardly killing of 7000 innocent victims...and consequently, a cause unlikely embraced by any God of any worthwhile religion, any God,including Allah...

3. With respect to the Sept. 11 mindless killing of 7000 innocent victims, "relativism and non-judgmentalism are not expressions of tolerance and inclusiveness...but they are expressions of escapism."
The killing of 7000 innocent victims was an "absolute" action demanding of an "absolute" response which included, as an "absolute" option, the turning over to international authorities of "the self proclaimed voice of Allah",OBL.. OBL, the wannabe martyr, but not martyr enough to turn himself over to international authorities and thereby avoid the needless death of his blinded followers, foolish in their belief in his perverted cause...and owing to such blind allegiance to such a perverted cause, perhaps headed for a much darker setting than that promised by their deluded, maniacal leader.
