Failing to recognize the really small numbers of people making all this noise could easily lead to errors resulting in antagonizing the majority. The lunatic fringe in these countries has about as much popularity and influence as does the American Nazi Party here. Even the Muslim Brotherhood, which is by far the most sympathetic to Palestinian rights and is considered among the most radical elements, has remained very low key in the current turmoil. The reason is that virtually every recognized, legitimate representative of Islam does not and will not condone killing of innocent people. So far, the U.S. military reaction has been carefully planned to avoid killing innocent civilians, and because of this, we are retaining the support of Muslim nations and a large majority of their people. Let's hope it stays that way and at the same time is moderately effective in destroying the Taliban capability to defend itself. In the long run, that kind of measured response will neutralize the Taliban, who have little popular support, virtually no logistical support, and almost no paths of communication with the outside world (including their sympathizers). Meanwhile, the price of oil remains stable and works against the destabilizing influence of the Taliban and the radical elements in nearby Iraq and even in Iran. Art
