Bin Laden's threats were certainly taken seriously, and there were more than threats involved. You might review theatlantic.com for an overview of the problems there.

My sentiments exactly.

I think it is inevitable that, in order to take out a greater devil, we have to resort to supplying arms to the devil sometimes and to create monsters out of common people who are so inclined. But once that objective is achieved, we should disarm and disable to monsters we create. We owe it to the world. We owe it to ourselves.
