I think the root cause of a lot of discontent is envy. A slight twist on this - the root cause is the loss of hope to address any "envious" feelings. Yes, people are naturally envious or ambitious, and it is natural to try and have more than the next person. It is only when they feel that there is no hope that they will ever be able to do something about it that they can be convinced to take unreasonable actions - that's when they start feeling that they have nothing to lose.
