MEXICO CITY -- (AP) -- Businessmen in the border city of Tijuana have asked the federal government to change the new area code scheduled to be assigned to the city, fearing the code -- 666 -- could give the violence-plagued metropolis a bad rap.

It is just a case of a wrong number, Tijuana's National Chamber of Commerce says.

``This will give our city a bad image,'' the chamber said in a news release, noting that Tijuana, located across the border from San Diego, has already suffered from ``out-of-control situations and tragedies that happen to occur here.''

Tijuana -- reputedly the headquarters of the Arellano Félix gang, Mexico's most violent drug cartel -- has had several of its police officials assassinated in broad daylight, and dozens of drug-related killings.

The number 666 is associated with Satan in the Bible.

In the Bible's Book of Revelation, verse 13:18 reads, ``Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is six hundred threescore and six.''
