The evil empire USSR was beaten back and eventually destroyed for us largely due to the efforts of the Afgans. Following that, they were in a horribly weakened condition and went through several civil war episodes which ultimately decimated the country. The Taleban came to Afghanistan from external intervention and ultimately set up this set of conditions.

Had we invoked something like the Marshal plan to help Afghanistan rebuild and to create a strong economy after their/our war with the USSR things would be much different.

Ok well, there are other ways to look at it but this one is just as legitimate as most.

Hi Neo,
WRT the following:

Anything that implied that there was a basis for the terrorists killing thousands of innocent people, or that
the United States was not worth defending, might legitimately be viewed askance.

I agree absolutely. I've had more than one conversation with jla recently, BTW, in which I've said that, out of a sense of propriety, I believe it is best right now for those of us who take issue with Pres. Bush to make those grievances in private.

In any event, we have followed a well- worn principle: that it is not up to us to determine the form of government for all of the nations with which we trade, it is for us to deal with the regimes "on the ground".

I can't disagree with that. I still feel, though, and with horrible hindsight, that we would do well to do some Monday-morning quarterbacking where this is concerned.

BTW, Have you, or anyone else here, read the article in this past Sunday's NYT magazine, entitled "This Is a Religious War"? I'm halfway through and it's extremely well-written. I'll look to post it if there's interest.
