Discoveries made by other cultures are many and important but I would argue it was they who did not see the big picture.

Did the Chinese use gunpowder to their great benefit? Did the Chinese and Japanese sail on the great oceans to new worlds? Have the Arabs made an important mathematical or scientific discovery in the last thousand years or so? I'm sure they have but I just can't think of one right now.

The Europeans and their descendants were/are remarkable in their willingness to take a chance when they see one and make the MOST of an opportunity.
