Jewel, I think that in general people within the US understand the differences within Christianity a lot more then they understand the differences and divisions within Islam. They can look at what a small odd offshoot of Christianity does and not see it as reflecting on Christian though in general but its harder to make such distinctions in areas where you knowledge is not as great and where much of it is purely academic rather then from direct experience or observation. Many people in the US are Christian. Almost everyone would at least know Christians. Islam while not insignificant in US isn't something most Americans have a direct or near direct experience with. This unfortunately can cause people to see evil acts committed by Muslims and cheered on by others as something that is somehow part of Islam's nature. Fortunately I do not think this is a majority view, but it doesn't take a majority believing a bad idea to cause problems.
