The U.S. official said that the fall of Mazar would clear the way for another opposition commander, Ismail Khan, to capture the western city of Herat. Such a turn of fortune could convince some Taliban commanders to break ranks with the Taliban and back the rebellion to preserve a Pashtun element in the government, administration officials and analysts said. Unlike the Taliban, the Northern Alliance mainly draws its support from the minority Uzbek, Tajik and Hazara communities.

There is nothing like success and unhappy journalists that have no drama to cash on. Close to home drama is the best, the 100+ afghan casualties are eerie and not unrelated to daily life. It is not even a psyops. No need be.

But a guy gets crushed, send out all the guys, we want all details !
BTW journalists : what church was the Croatian bus hightjakers attending ?
What was that story of a light plane commandeered in New Mexico couple or days ago.
Now if the Pentagon asks not to speak of those, fine, let's have more details our of Mac Dill.
Not to mention the seals still gearing up, waiting for security channels to be opened into the Kush area.
Won't be soon. Need not be either.
