Hey, I meant (soot) was: carbon... so that would obviously be: "partially burned hydrocarbons"... not "totally combusted hydrocarbons"

Why so picky? You knew what I meant.

"Why not provide the link?"

Well, if you want it that bad, I'll try to find it for you... but I don't regard it as a particularly startling concept to think that breathing in a lot off soot over a lifetime could possibly cause serious health problems... maybe even shorten one's life.

I remember reading recently about newly discovered ancient human cadavers... which were found to have blackening of their lung tissue (possibly from a short lifetime of breathing in wood smoke fumes in their caves over the long winters).

So, I don't think black lungs are a particularly startling discovery to find where there's a lot of smoke around (there's nothing new under the sun, as they say).

As far as "diesels getting more miles per gallon" that's just my sloppy, unscientific way of saying they release more energy per unit of fuel.... Which is one of the reasons for their use in trucking, and other heavy vehicles... and doesn't seem to be much of a secret.
