It's not like any of them are economic or military powerhouses. Hell, most of them us US made weapons, and thus are reliant upon our repair and resupply network. And who stands to profit if the Arabs cut off oil shipments... Russian, Norwegian, and UK oil interests, amongst others.. Sure they have their extremist religious fanatics who will attempt to wreak a bit of havoc from time to time, but we survived the '70s and we'll survive this.. In fact, the quickest way to prevent such future attacks is to severely limit the right to travel in the West for ALL Arabs. Of course, we'll never go that far unless this war expands, but there is certainly little reason for Europe and Russia to fear the Arabs, except for economically. But I can also say with some certainty that were your scenario to play out, China would likely become a major alternative, or secondary ally of the Arabs. Because they need oil to grow their economy. Lots of really really cheap oil... But so does everyone else..... And I can't believe the US will sit back and be an idle player in all this, given how much oil we import. And while the US may be doing the "dirty work" for other nations too afraid or incapable of handling it, I don't "get your picture" contained in those two scenarios.. US foreign policy generally revolves around doing just enough to get us by politically, and not committing ourselves to something long term, or controversial. Furthermore, although we do intervene from time to time, we're still uncomfortable doing so, since we believe either the individual parties should resolve it between themselves, as well as the traditional American disdain for committing our troops to foreign disputes. This is why the US has not imposed a solution on the Israelis and Palestinians, because anything imposed will not be recognized as legitimate by either party. And were slow to anger when it comes to US forces being attacked overseas because we realize that, because the US is more free, we figure that its the cost of doing business for Americans to be attacked from time to time overseas. Besides, it provides the ability for the US to pressure allies to deal with their terrorist elements. But on Sept 11th, it all changed. The US was brutally attacked. What had been a case of US indifference or lethargy regarding foreign conflicts, suddenly became one where the security of the US was directly involved. The US has woken up Gustave... And before this is all said and done, we will be STRONGER, not weaker. Other nations will continue to fall in line behind us, not oppose us with regard to this war on terrorism. We will make the economic costs of not complying far too expensive. And the fact that the US comprises 33% of Global GDP makes such a threat VERY REAL to them. Thus, without some major catastrophe in the US that causes a drastic decline in our power and influence, I don't see your fascist state arising without the downfall of the US. Btw, Russia isn't the only nation that possesses nukes. So if we turn your logic around, we can see Russia telling Bin Laden to chill out: The Russsians to Bin Laden: --"Stop messing around with your Islamic bullshit! You're gonna piss off the Yanks BIG TIME and snafu the whole region!!" Bin Laden to the Russkies --"To hell with you! I don't give a shit about those infidel bastards!! I WANT MY OWN ISLAMIC EMIRATE... NOW!!" The Russians to Bin Laden: "GODDAMMIT Bin!! those crazy Yanks will just nuke the whole of you! We don't want a nuclear war between Pakistan and Russia! Sorry Bin, we warned you: from now on, you'll be on your own. Period." . . . . And btw, a nuclear war between Pakistan and Russia?????!!!!! Give us a break... Pakistan would be turned into a self-lit, sub-asian parking lot... Hawk Hawk
