Historically, fear, hatred, and impoverishment have proved to make up the hotbed of fascism... Just think of the Roaring Twenties and the ensuing rise of fascism all across Europe in the 1930s --from Spain to Italy to Vichyist France to Nazi Germany to... The US did nothing to prevent it --as it was itself in the throes of gangsterism (Al Capone), Prohibition, KKK, etc... I think Euroland's economy won't recover from the present slump. That's for "impoverishment". As for fear and hatred, well, so long as no terrorist attacks break out in Continental Europe, fear will not turn into (anti-Arab/immigrant) hatred --but who knows what the Russians and their Eurofascist sidekicks have in store?? As regards the US-led coalition against terrorism, I'm really surprised of how short-lived it's been: over here, in Europe, the leftist/anti-American crowd is already demonstrating in front of US embassies --like their "parents" did in the 1980s (pacifists against Pershing/Cruise missiles in Germany, etc.) Green/ecologist parties are at the forefront of the current "give peace a chance in Afghanistan" movement. In France, the situation gets further complicated by the US' snubbing of the French. Indeed, the so-called French Doctors expected to get at least the humanitarian part of the Afghan campaign... But the US seems to want it all: you're dropping both "smart bombs" AND food supplies! Hence the French media branding the whole US operation as a cynical, clumsy showoff of American.... unilateralism. I guess we've come full circle --and back to the familiar US-EU rift of yore. Gus.
