Treason and being unpatriotic are two different things. However, the point remains: The large automakers (American and foreign) deliberately did an end run around federal mileage standards by building gas-guzzling SUVs ... and then screamed that they are exempt from MPG rules because they're really trucks.

Perhaps a more logical answer would be this: Tax anyone who wants to buy a SUV $2,000. Also tax Detroit $2,000 for every SUV sold. Then take this money and use it for research/development of cars that run on soybeans or corn oil instead of crude.
